President Trump on Wednesday called for billionaire George Soros and his son Alex to face federal racketeering charges, accusing them of supporting “violent protests.”
It’s the latest escalation of Mr. Trump’s feud with the Democratic megadonors who use their vast resources to push leftist causes. Republicans have long depicted the Soros family as Democratic boogeyman because they’ve funneled millions into left-wing political campaigns, causes and protests.
“George Soros and his wonderful radical left son should be charged with RICO because of their support of violent protests and much more, all throughout the United States of America. We’re not going to allow these lunatics to rip apart America anymore, never giving it so much as a chance to ’BREATHE’ and be FREE,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Soros and his group of psychopaths have caused great damage to our country! That includes his crazy west coast friends. Be careful, we’re watching you!,” the president continued.
Media reports say the Open Society Foundations, chaired by Alex Soros, helped fund activists protesting Mr. Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Washington.
It’s unclear if the Justice Department has opened a RICO investigation into George Soros and the Open Society. A department spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Under the RICO Act, prosecutors can target organized crime activities that arise from the existence of a criminal enterprise, such as a gang or corporation. It’s typically used to target loan sharking, racketeering and gambling. These cases are often complex and lengthy, but lead to severe penalties.
