New York Mayor Eric Adams told Congress under oath on Wednesday that his new stance on illegal immigrants isn’t the result of any deal with the Trump administration.
During a hearing on sanctuary cities, Democrats repeatedly challenged Mr. Adams over the issue, pointing to the Justice Department’s move to dismiss criminal charges against the mayor. They said they can’t see any other reason he’s more willing to cooperate with the White House on immigration enforcement.
“There is no deal, no quid pro quo, and I did nothing wrong,” Mr. Adams said.
He said he wouldn’t comment beyond that due to the ongoing case, where a judge is trying to decide whether to accept the Justice Department’s motion to dismiss the charges.
Mr. Adams was charged with bribery and wire fraud.
“You have, sir, a trust problem,” said Rep. Robert Garcia, California Democrat.
He objected to an appearance Mr. Adams made with White House border czar Tom Homan on Fox News, an interview the congressman called “incredibly concerning.”
“You sat next to him, you smiled, you bad-mouthed the New York City Council,” Mr. Garcia said.
Mr. Adams has said he’s working with Mr. Homan to give Homeland Security officers access to the city’s main jail, and they have other plans in the works.
