Elon Musk said Wednesday that he regrets his social media attacks on President Trump.

“They went too far,” the tech billionaire wrote on X.

Mr. Musk’s statement is his most strident effort so far to make peace with Mr. Trump after a very public blowup in which both men hurled insults and threats at each other.

In one particularly stunning exchange, Mr. Musk claimed that Mr. Trump was mentioned in the confidential files of billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and the president threatened to pull Mr. Musk’s government contracts worth billions.

Mr. Musk later deleted the posts, and a former attorney for Mr. Epstein, who died by suspected suicide in 2019, said the disgraced financier “made clear” that Mr. Trump did nothing wrong and that he had “no damaging information against [Mr. Trump].”

Ahead of Mr. Musk’s expression of regret, he also noted on X that his net worth fell more than $100 billion because of his efforts to lead the Trump administration’s cost-cutting advisory panel, the Department of Government Efficiency. Most of that loss comes as investors sold off shares of his car company, Tesla.

“Worth it,” he wrote of the loss.

I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.

In a series of X posts last week, Mr. Musk shredded the president’s massive legislation aimed at lowering taxes and boosting border security, known as the “big, beautiful bill.” Mr. Musk called it a “disgusting abomination” and blasted House Republicans for voting for it.

He also claimed that it would add trillions to the U.S. debt, a criticism that has been disputed by the White House. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has projected that it would add about $2.4 trillion in deficits over 10 years.

Mr. Musk further claimed that Mr. Trump would have lost the 2024 election without his bankrolling of the president’s campaign. He also called to impeach Mr. Trump and replace him with Vice President J.D. Vance and even raised the idea of a third party.

Mr. Trump fired back, labeling Mr. Musk as “crazy” and arguing that the Tesla owner was angry because the legislation would repeal the electric vehicle tax credits, which would impact the car company.

The feud hit a shocking apex when Mr. Musk alleged that Mr. Trump was in the Epstein files.

“That is the real reason they have not been made public,” Mr. Musk wrote on X. “Have a nice day DJT.”

After that post, Republican lawmakers quickly urged the two men to make peace, saying that they had similar views and many of the same priorities. When a Trump ally posted on social media that it would be in both their interests to patch up their feud, Mr. Musk responded, “True.”

However, Mr. Trump told reporters this week that he’s “not really interested” in reconciling with Mr. Musk.

“I’m not thinking about Elon Musk,” the president said over the weekend. “I just wish him well.”
